One Covid-19 infection has been confirmed at the Bergi nursing home in Bolungarvík. Two additional residents are in isolation and their samples are on their way to Reykjavík. Eight household members are in quarantine, a total of eleven people. Berg is part of the Vestfjörður Health Foundation.

Most of the employees in Berg, or seventeen, are in quarantine, and in addition, the employees in Bol are also in quarantine. Ból is a home for a disabled child that is run in a building connected to Bergi. Staff have been transferred after prisoners from other departments of the Vestfjörður Health Institute to help. People from the rearguard forces have also been called, and people from other parts of the country are expected today. There is a significant load on the workers in the home and a further need for well-trained staff in the coming days and weeks.

"The situation is serious, but everyone is working together to ensure the safety of household members and staff," says CEO Gylfi Ólafsson.

There have been significant restrictions on the home's activities in recent weeks, and a ban on visitors has been in effect for some time. The fact that an infection has still occurred shows how subtle the virus is. It is important to follow all the instructions of the authorities. This applies to both the general public and healthcare professionals. Aseptic hygiene has been further tightened in Berg because of this situation, as well as in communal service apartments for the elderly.

Samples from residents in isolation, employees and the public are on their way to Reykjavík for analysis. The numbers are changing very quickly, but at the time of writing, 75 samples are awaiting analysis, 50 of which were taken today. There are now 27 confirmed infections. About a quarter of Bolvíkings are now in quarantine.

Consultations have been held with the epidemiologist, the public safety department of the national police, the police in Vestfjörður and the local mayor about the situation in the last few days and actions.
