Fjölnir Freyr Guðmundsson, gastrointestinal surgeon, has started working at the Ísafjarðarbær Health Institute.

Fjölnir was born in Akureyri in 1966. He graduated from Akureyri High School in 1986 and from there went to the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki, where he graduated in 1993. He then studied abroad and received specialist qualifications in general surgery in 2000 and in gastrointestinal surgery in 2004 in Bergen, Norway. He then completed his doctoral studies in June 2004. The doctoral project dealt with increased intra-abdominal pressure in connection with serious accidents and diseases. Fjölnir also studied health management at Bergen Business School in Norway in 2002.  
Fjölnir started work on September 1 last. on Ísafjörður. He is married to Jónína Guðjónsdóttir and they have 3 children.
The staff of the Health Institute welcomes Fjölnir to work.
