At the meeting of the institute's executive board on June 29 last, it was agreed to hire Þorstein Jóhannesson, chief medical officer, as the institute's medical director from July 1. The position was advertised as open for application last April.

Þorsteinn was born in Ísafjörður in 1951 and graduated from the University of Iceland in 1977.
He obtained a specialist license in general surgery in 1985 and 1986 in Germany. He completed his doctoral studies in 1989 and covered the doctoral thesis on prognosis in acute pancreatitis.
Þorsteinn has been the chief physician of Fjörðungssúkrahús in Ísafjörður since 1990.
