Initiative day at Patreksfjörður health care 1 November 2023
Have you received an invitation for inspection?
Women aged 23-29 are invited to be screened for cervical cancer every 3 years, and women aged 30-64 every five years.
Attendance at cervical cancer screening has been low in rural areas.
Attendance needs to be improved for the oldest and youngest women, and especially for women with foreign citizenship. Invitations are received from the Cancer Screening Coordination Center. Screening is done at health centers all over the country.
It is important to act, to educate, to help spread the word.
The Vestfjörður Health Foundation draws attention to the fact that it is easy to book an appointment with a midwife at the health center in Ísafjörður and Patreksfjörður. Inspection costs only ISK 500.
Screening is available throughout the winter, twice a month, at the health center in Patreksfjörður. Erla Rún Sigurjónsdóttir midwife takes care of examinations. You can book an appointment on "My pages" at Heilsuvera.is or contact the health care on phone 450-2000.
In Iceland, around 19 are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year and around 1,700 with cell changes that can develop into cervical cancer if nothing is done. Common symptoms of cervical cancer include unexplained bleeding, bleeding after intercourse, changes in discharge and pain in the lower abdomen. The earlier cervical cancer is diagnosed, the better the chances of recovery. Regular screening for cervical cancer can reduce mortality from the disease by 80–90%.
• Screening is intended for asymptomatic women, and only those women who have received an invitation for an examination can book an appointment (it does not matter how far away the appointment is).
• Other women are advised to see a doctor if they are worried about their health or have symptoms.
Regular screening is recommended even if you have received the HPV vaccination. HPV vaccination reduces the risk of cervical cancer but can never completely prevent it.
