Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson, Minister of Health, has decided to strengthen health services in rural areas by joining together health institutions in four regions in the West, the Westfjords and the North.
In the Westfjords, it is a case of unification Ísafjarðarbær Health Institute and Bolungarvík Health Institute.
The aim of these measures is to increase and strengthen services to the residents, make better use of the knowledge of professionals and create stronger business units. The merger also creates the possibility of increasing local services to the residents, for example through regular visits of specialist doctors and other health workers to the various establishments in the respective areas.
The Minister of Health has instructed the officials of the Ministry to work on the merger in close cooperation with the local people in the coming months. In the coming weeks, representatives of the ministry will visit and meet with representatives of the relevant municipalities, representatives of institutions, professionals and others. It is aimed that proposals for the implementation of the mergers will be available at the beginning of June and that they will be fully implemented by the end of next year.
