In light of the new traces of infection in the northern part of the Westfjords, the public safety operations board in the Westfjords, in consultation with the epidemiologist and the public safety department of the National Police Commissioner, has decided to further respond to COVID-19 in Suðureyri, Flateyri, Þingeyri and Súðavík with intensified measures, as detailed here:

  • Kindergartens and elementary schools in Suðeyri, Flateyri, Þingeyri and Súðavík will be closed starting tomorrow, April 6, 2020. However, children on priority lists must be placed in kindergartens and 1st and 2nd grades of elementary school.
  • A ban on gatherings will be based on 5 people (however, this does not apply to families living in the same household).
  • The number of customers in larger stores (>150 square meters) is a maximum of 30 at any given time.

People are encouraged to stay at home, maintain social distancing, limit travel and follow the instructions of the authorities.

Workplaces or groups that believe they need an exemption are advised to apply for one at the Ministry of Health.

Five new infections occurred in the last solar cycle, and they are all connected to the northern part of the Vestfjords. Infection tracking is ongoing and the results of a number of samples that have been taken are awaited.

The Icelandic Red Cross provides assistance to people in quarantine and isolation by phone, 1717.
This measure is temporary, intended to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Restrictions in Suðureyri, Þingeyri, Flateyri and Súðavík in Response to Covid-19

The Local Crisis Coordination Center, in cooperation with the Chief Epidemiologist, Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management, has decided to take further action regarding restrictions of movement in response to confirmed Covid-19 infections in Suðureyri, Þingeyri, Flateyri and Súðavík, as follows .

  • All kindergartens and primary schools are suspended effective 2nd April. Children on priority lists in kindergartens and 1st and 2nd grade are exempt from this. Parents who work in healthcare or in essential roles are applicable for the priority list, see www.island.is. www.island.is.
  • Gatherings of more than 5 people are not allowed, except within families.
  • Large shops are restricted to 30 customers at a time.

People are encouraged to stay at home, maintain social distance, limit travel and follow other instructions from the Directorate of Health.

Essential workplaces can apply for exceptions from the Ministry of Health.

The Red Cross offers people assistance in getting necessities, such as groceries. Call 1717.

This is a temporary measure, intended to stop the spread of Covid-19. Health authorities are working on tracing possible infections. Results from more tests are awaited. A significant number of people are in quarantine and isolation already.. However, all residents are encouraged to follow general rules and directions from health authorities.
