On International Nursing Day, May 12, 2004, which was also the 85th anniversary of the old "Society of Icelandic Nurses", the Vestfjörður Division of the Icelandic Nurses' Association hosted the opening of an exhibition of old nursing and medical equipment in the museum building on Ísafjörður, which used to be a quarter hospital.

As part of the occasion, the department presented the Health Institute with a semi-automatic defibrillator model AccessAED as a gift.
The department financed the purchase equally against the FSÍ Memorial Fund for Úlf Gunnarsson fv. chief physician.
The device is very compact, but extremely perfect. It automatically evaluates the heart rate and arrhythmias and tells itself how to use the device, connect to the patient and when to push. These commands appear both on the screen and also with a voice in Icelandic.

These devices and others like them are widely taught to the public to use. Abroad, they are found on the walls of shopping centers and large companies. In this country, this use is spreading in the same way, and you can also find them in many police cars, health centers, ambulances, and elsewhere.

The Ísafjarðarbær Health Foundation thanks the Vestfjörður Division of the Icelandic Nurses' Association for the initiative with the exhibition and the generous donation, which greatly improves the speed of response to serious heart attacks and will hopefully prevent premature deaths from them.
