Starting next Tuesday, January 27, regular cervical cancer screening will be introduced at the health care center in Ísafjörður. The sampling is done in collaboration with the Norwegian Cancer Society's search center, but midwife Erla Rún Sigurjónsdóttir performs the examinations. It is planned to offer this service every month starting at the beginning of the year. These are only cervical examinations, but screening for breast cancer will continue to be offered by the search center every year, as it has been.
We would like to remind women of the importance of getting check-ups, but all women aged 23-65 receive an invitation letter for cervical cancer screening every three years and more often if necessary. In this country, systematic screening for cervical cancer has reduced the number of new cases per year by 70% and the death rate by 90% since the search began in 1964. This good result is, of course, largely based on the good attendance of women.
All women who receive invitation letters in the coming weeks are encouraged to book an appointment.
