The nursing department at Sólborg á Flateyri will be closed in 2010 and the need for nursing space there will be met in other ways.

The reason is that the Vestfjörður Health Institute, like other health institutions in the country, needs to reduce its operations. For this reason, donations to nursing rooms at the Vestfjörður Health Center will decrease by 28.8 million next year. That reduction will only be met by a reduction in activities, as most of the organization's expenses are salaries.

In Flateyri, Sólborg's small nursing unit has been run for many years in an extremely unsuitable and old building. The department is on the second floor of a building without an elevator and there is a lot of overcrowding. There has been little demand for places there and it has now come to the point that for the longest time there have been 2-3 household members, which means that the department has been very underutilized. In light of this, it has been decided that the nursing unit at Sólborg will be closed in 2010.

The Vestfjörður Health Institute will ensure that the residents receive safe accommodation when the home is closed. Consultations will be held with relatives and residents in the new year. The employees who have now been dismissed at Sólborg will be considered if new hires are needed due to employee turnover at the organization in 2010.
